Number of course hours and participant’s workload expressed in ECTS points:
70 didactic hours + 260 hours of student’s workload, total: 13 ECTS points.

Learning goals:
The aim of the programme is the analysis of selected issues from the history of early modern, 19th and 20th century Polish literature and knowledge of the Polish language. The School is interdisciplinary, with lecturers representing literary and linguistic studies. The classes have been selected in such a way as to present in a synthetic formula the continuity of the historical-literary process and the latest trends in Polish linguistic research. The other purpose of the courses is to popularise knowledge of Polish literature and language. The school also provides space for perfecting rhetorical skills (in the area of academic discourse), using the acquired knowledge in practice, creating a solid base for independent comparative studies.

Learnig outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE
Upon completion of the programme, the student knows and understands:

  • to a great extent selected works and ideas of eminent figures of Polish culture, literature and science and their influence on the shape of Polish and world culture, literature, and science

  • major literary and linguistic concepts which constitute advanced interpretative categories of contemporary humanities and auxiliary disciplines

  • main developmental trends in the study of language and literature

  • electronic resources and IT tools used in research on Polish language

  • the importance of translation as a process of interlingual and intercultural communication, and the conditions it is subjected to 
SKILLS
Upon completion of the programme, the student is able to:

  • analyze and interpret cultural texts using the conceptual apparatus of linguistics and literary studies

  • search for, analyze and use information using Polish and foreign sources

  • recognize the mechanisms and indicate the causes of typical linguistic errors in translation

  • recognize personal models of ancient culture and indicate differences between them resulting from different definition of social roles

  • construct a valid argument and draw conclusions, referring to the ideas and views of various authors

  • communicate with the community, taking into account its specificity, needs and cultural differences between the participants of the communication

  • present, evaluate and discuss different opinions and stances

  • cooperate with others in group work, also of interdisciplinary and international character, and take a leading role in it

  • use their knowledge of linguistics and literary studies and auxiliary disciplines, formulate and solve complex and unusual problems and perform tasks under conditions that are not fully predictable

  • independently plan and implement their own lifelong learning, set the path of their academic and professional development

  • formulate and test hypotheses related to simple research problems in linguistics, literary studies, and auxiliary disciplines
SOCIAL COMPETENCE
Upon completion of the programme, the student is ready to:

  • critically evaluate prior knowledge and new information

  • application of knowledge of linguistics, literary studies and auxiliary disciplines to the analysis and interpretation of other cultural phenomena

  • cooperate responsibly in a group, take on different roles within the group and undertake different tasks

  • critically evaluate phenomena that threaten the functioning of an open society

  • take an informed part in cultural life and assume responsibility for maintaining the value of cultural heritage in its diversity
